The Chinese Language School of CCCNJ was established in the early seventies, and is a non-profit organization run by parents of the students. The goals of the school are to teach verbal (Cantonese) and written skills of the Chinese language, and to educate children in the cultural values of the Chinese heritage.
Classes are held at the Grace Lutheran Church of River Edge, 925 5th Avenue, River Edge, NJ 07661 (Bergen County, New Jersey). The school hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Saturdays, during the months of September through June. Optional extra curricular activities are offered after school, such as, Chinese Chess, calligraphy, and Chinese Folk Dancing.
Officers of the school are parents elected by other parents. All parents participate in the administration of the school, and are requested to join in committees, such as education, programming, social activities, etc. These committees provide planning, and create a positive learning environment for the children.
The school conducts classes from prekindergarten to sixth grade. The classes are held in Cantonese, with a minimum of English when necessary. The adoption of Cantonese is preferred to meet the large population of Chinese families who are of Cantonese background. Students are assigned to classes not by their ages, but by their competency in the Chinese language. All children, ages 4 years and up, are welcome to enroll. In addition, there is a Chinese conversation and history class offered to adults. Please feel free to visit the school on Saturdays during school hours to meet the students, teachers, and parents.
The Chinese Language School offers an excellent opportunity for children to learn Cantonese and to meet people of the same heritage. By participating in the school and CCCNJ activities, everyone will certainly enjoy seeing cultural growth, and develop warm and lasting friendships.
